Offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) through the Department of Business Economics, USJ, new admissions for the Master of Philosophy in Business Economics (MPhil(BEc)) are now open for the Academic Year 2025 – October Intake.

Programme Structure and Eligibility

The MPhil (BEc) programme is designed for individuals seeking to deepen their expertise in Business Economics. To be eligible for registration, applicants must possess a sound knowledge of English and hold one of the following qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree with a first or second-class standing from a recognized university, specializing in Business Economics, Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Accounting, Financial Management, Entrepreneurship, Estate Management and Valuation, Operations and Technology Management, Public Administration, Business Information Systems, Statistics, Science, or Mathematics.
A Master’s degree from a recognized university in Business Economics, Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Accounting, Professional Accounting, Financial Management, Applied Finance, Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Business Management, Real Estate Management and Valuation, Operations and Technology Management, Public Administration, Business Information Systems, Statistics, Science, or Mathematics.
Successful completion of the PGDBE programme offered by the Department of Business Economics.
Other qualifications equivalent to the above may be considered, subject to the approval of the Senate.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to complete your application for the MPhil (BEc) program:

Initiate Application: Click on the “Apply Now” button below or navigate to the “Applications” page on the USJ website.
Login: Select the course “Master of Philosophy in Business Economics” and log in using your email and NIC/passport number.
Submit Details: Enter your personal details and click on “Submit.”
Download Documents: A new webpage will confirm “You have successfully submitted your Application.” From this page, download your application and the bank pay slip.
Pay Application Fee (Online): You can pay the application fee of LKR 2,000/- online immediately using a Visa or Master Card by clicking the relevant icon on the successful submission page.
Pay Application Fee (Offline): If you are unable to pay online at this stage, you must visit a People’s Bank branch physically and pay the application fee of LKR 2,000/- to the following account:
- Account Holder: University of Sri Jayewardenepura
- Account Number: 053010006772
- Bank & Branch: People’s Bank, Gangodawila Branch
- Note: This account number has 12 digits, unlike the usual 15-digit People’s Bank accounts. Therefore, Cash Deposit Machines or bank applications cannot be used for this payment. If a bank officer states the account number is incorrect, please ask them to contact People’s Bank, Gangodawila branch directly.

Re-login: Log in again by repeating steps 1 and 2.
Proceed with Application: Click on the “Next” button at the bottom of the page. You may edit your details if necessary.
Upload Documents (Optional for online submission, Mandatory for Hard Copy): You can upload scanned copies of the following documents. While online upload is not mandatory, sending hard copies is (refer to step 10 below):
- Color Photograph (3.0cm width x 4.0cm height with plain sky-blue background) – .jpg or .png file
- Birth Certificate – .pdf file
- Bank payment receipt or Online payment receipt – .pdf file
- Academic Certificates (First Degree & Masters/MPhil) – .pdf files
- Professional Qualifications Certificate/s – .pdf files
- Other Qualifications Certificate/s – .pdf file/s
- Service letter – .pdf file
- ***Please note: You do not need to upload any Research Proposal / Concept paper at this stage.***
Post Hard Copies: Post the printed application (from step 4) along with certified copies of all documents listed in step 9 via registered post to:
